Noun:
a collection of things lying about in an untidy mass.
Clutter, Collection, Mess is an examination of the value of objects we surround ourselves with in our daily lives. Their accumulation is often an afterthought following procurement; this project aims to scrutinize the line between trash and treasure. The threshold between imagery appearing ‘real’ and ‘unreal’ is explored with the translation of objects often regarded as clutter into digital spaces - do they obtain or lose value within the 3D realm?

Aiming to explore the connection between physicality and digital representations, images categorized under ‘clutter’ were sourced from royalty-free image databases and fed into dall-e within the Runway ML system. Trained under a data set with varying subjects and densities, the synthesizedabstractions presented results varying in degrees of abstraction.
Once equipped with a significant archive of generated interpretations of clutter, the images were used as textures for objects within a VR simulation. Superimposed upon 3D models of objects and surfaces within a bedroom, the resulting outcome is a loaded sensorial experience of waste in the digital realm. The viewer is able to pick up and stack elements of trash whilst stuck in a room, unable to leave or to discard of these objects.
